Course objectives: Improve translational outcomes in preclinical research, by 

  • Providing fundamental information and resources on mouse genetics; 'normal' and abnormal phenotypes (oriented toward improving model selection and experimental design); genetic engineering strategies; traditional and novel imaging strategies; various aspects of neurobehavioral phenotyping; metabolic phenotyping; pulmonary phenotyping; clinical pathology and anatomic pathology phenotyping;
  •  Practical laboratory sessions to develop skills in mouse handling; specimen collections for hematology, histology and other testing; tissue identification, and basic pathology; 

Course format (> 30 contact hours) :

  • Lectures ~24hr
  • Laboratory sessions ~10: Four (4) Hands-on sessions (include clinical and physical examination of mice, specimen collection, clinical pathology and anatomic pathology.
  •  Poster sessions, laboratory tours, pathology slide conference: 7 hours
  • Syllabus material is provided electronically as PDF’s. BW print copy on request.
    Laboratory Manual (print copy) is provided to all participating laboratory sessions (also provided electronically).
