Program Offered
The Laboratory of Pathology & Toxicology offers two positions each year in
a three year training program leading to eligibility to sit for the ACVP board
examination. The Laboratory of Pathology and Toxicology is a subdivision of the
Department of Pathobiology within the School of Veterinary Medicine. Other components
of the department are the Laboratory of Avian Medicine and Pathology, the Laboratory
of Parasitology, the Laboratory of Microbiology and Immunology, and the University
Laboratory Animal Resources. There are 2 campuses served by the Laboratory of
Pathology and Toxicology, Philadelphia and New Bolton Center, the latter located
in rural Chester County, Pa. The new Bolton Center laboratory is also part of
the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory system (PADLS).
The Laboratory of Pathology & Toxicology undertakes necropsies on animals
submitted from the Veterinary Hospitals (Philadelphia and New Bolton) of the
University of Pennsylvania and on laboratory animals from within the University
of Pennsylvania. These teaching hospitals each generate approximately 1,000
necropsy accessions per year. In addition Surgical Pathology is also undertaken
at both sites on tissues submitted by the hospitals and on material received
from veterinary practitioners. The total number of biopsies processed each
year is Philadelphia - 19000 cases and New Bolton
Center - 500 cases.
Trainees participate in the necropsy and surgical pathology services with
a greater emphasis on necropsies at the beginning of the training period.

Stipend
Effective July 1, 2005, the salary for residents is $27,000 per annum.
