Anatomic Pathology Training Program
Our pathology residency program is structured as an intensive three year training
program that is designed to prepare trainees for the ACVP membership examination
in anatomic pathology. Hands-on training in anatomic and surgical pathology
is provided with emphasis on gross and microscopic pathology complemented by
optional theoretical courses in pathology and by self-driven literature searches
on the pathogenesis of disease and current topics in pathology. Opportunities
are also provided for limited training in selected specialties of pathology (experimental/comparative
pathology, food animal pathology, zoo and wildlife pathology, clinical pathology,
etc) through internal University of Minnesota rotations or external rotations
in other institutions, laboratories and/or companies. Residents also assist in
teaching pathology to first, second, and fourth year veterinary students. During
or upon completion of the residency program, residents may pursue graduate training
in one of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s graduate training programs,
i.e., Molecular Veterinary Biosciences or Veterinary Medicine, which provide
opportunities to engage in diverse areas of research. Preference for admission
is given to applicants for the residency training program who wish to pursue
the PhD degree.
Appointments and Stipend
Up to two residency training positions are available annually. Appointments
are annually renewable depending upon performance (reviewed every 6 months)
and availability of funds. For 2009 the annual stipend is $32,000 plus benefits.
Facilities
The pathology program provides diagnostic services to veterinary clinicians
and practitioners in the Veterinary Medical Center, the State of Minnesota,
surrounding states and North America. Development and practice of applied skills
in anatomic and clinical pathology are carried out in modern facilities in
the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and the hematology and chemistry laboratories
in the Veterinary Medical Center. In fulfilling the teaching and diagnostic
responsibilities the pathology program annually performs approximately 1,500
necropsies and 4,200 cytology specimens. Graduate courses and research affiliations
foster interaction with other faculty in the College of Veterinary Medicine,
College of Biological Sciences, College of Agriculture, Food, Environmental
Sciences, and the Masonic Cancer Center and other Departments of the Medical
School at the University of Minnesota.
Community
The College of Veterinary Medicine is located on the St. Paul Campus of the
University of Minnesota. The St. Paul campus is located in the heart of the
Twin Cities metropolitan area equidistant from the two downtown areas. About
4,000 of the 45,000 University of Minnesota students are enrolled in one of
five college units on the St. Paul campus. The College of Agriculture, Food,
Environmental Sciences and the College of Biological Sciences are located on
the St. Paul campus and the Medical School is located on the Minneapolis Campus.
An intercampus bus system links the two campuses. The Twin Cities of Minneapolis
and St. Paul have a combined population of approximately 2.5 million people
and represents one of the largest metropolitan areas with a College of Veterinary
Medicine.
