Programs Offered
A MS and a Doctoral degree (Ph.D. equivalent) in veterinary pathology, by course work, and research leading to either a written dissertation or a Thesis to be presented at the end of the program, are offered. There is continuous involvement in diagnostic pathology while enrolled in any of the above programs. The duration of the formal course work is 18 months for the MS degree and the average duration until research is completed and dissertation is written is 24 months, being 36 and 48 months respectively for the Doctoral degree. Lines of research for which funding is currently available include Comparative pathology, Pathology of poisonous plants and nutritional deficiencies, Diseases of ruminants and horses, Diagnosis of infectious disease of livestock. All lectures are taught, and Thesis and Dissertation written, in Portuguese.

Types and Numbers of Appointments
Five fellowships are available each year, three for the MS and two for the Doctoral program.

Facilities
The department of Pathology provides diagnostic pathology services to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. Histopathological examination of mailed-in specimens is provided to assist veterinary practitioners working in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Necropsies of farm animals are performed in the field by staff members upon request from veterinary practitioners or farmers. An integrated service of diagnostics is offered by the Departments of Pathology, Microbiology, Parasitology, Virology, and Toxicology.

Community
The main campus of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria is located 15 km from the downtown area of Santa Maria, which is situated in the center of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The University has approximately 14,000 students and there are 200,000 inhabitants in the city of Santa Maria. The climate is temperate and average temperatures are 28 degrees Celsius in the summer and 10 degrees Celsius the winter; higher temperatures during summer are around 35 degrees Celsius C, while lower winter temperatures are around 5 degrees Celsius.

Stipends and Maintenance
Traditionally, two Brazilian governmental agencies, CNPq and CAPES, provide scholarships for graduates students. The fellowship, paid in Brazilian currency, is approximately US$ 7,000 annually for the MS students US$ 9,900 for the Doctoral students. Considering the cost of living in Santa Maria, these amounts allow for room and board and other essential living costs.

Applications
Candidates must have been graduated from accredited School of Veterinary Medicine. Applications must be received by October 31 to begin March 1 of the following year. Applicants must take a selection exam which consists of general pathology, systemic pathology (description and interpretation of digitalized pictures of gross lesions and of microscope glass slides of selected histopathology), knowledge of the English Language, and attend an interview.
