Fish Health Laboratory

Programs Offered
The Fish Health Laboratory (formerly known as National Fish Health Research Laboratory 1977-1993; Eastern Fish Disease Laboratory 1958-1976) develops methods for the isolation, detection, and identification of fish pathogens; prevention and control of fish diseases; biomarkers as indicators of contaminant effects. Studies are conducted on pathogenesis of infectious and non-infectious diseases. Molecular genetics methods are developed for identification of populations, strains, and species. The laboratory offers no specific training programs but does accommodate graduate students and visiting scientists on a case by case basis.

Facilities
Seven general purpose laboratories equipped especially for bacteriology, virology, histology, immunogenetics, or immunology. Wet laboratories vary from 464 square feet to 7000 square feet. Water temperature can be modulated in some areas. The laboratory staff enjoy an excellent international reputation related to fish health. Staff conduct cooperative research and maintain universities and government agencies.

Community
The laboratory is in a rural environment on a site originally established as a US Fish and Wildlife Service hatchery. The location is approximately 60 miles west of Washington, DC.

Stipends and Maintenance
Routine financial support is not available. Temporary housing may be available.
