Auburn University
Auburn, AL

Programs Offered
Combined residency-M.S. degree and residency-Ph.D. degree programs are offered in veterinary pathology and veterinary clinical pathology. Programs with a special focus on poultry pathology or aquatic pathobiology are offered jointly with the State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and the Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures, respectively. General training objectives are to provide: (1) comprehensive training in anatomic and clinical veterinary pathology in preparation for certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists; (2) research training and experience in experimental pathology consistent with the fulfillment of requirements for the Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degree; and (3) experience in the teaching of pathology.

A traineefs program of study is designed to meet the individualfs needs and interests. Included in each program of study are activities relevant to course work, residency experiences, independent study, teaching assignments, and research. Residency experiences are provided in anatomic and clinical pathology by the Department of Pathobiology and in anatomic pathology (particularly avian pathology) and toxicology by the State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Research projects can be selected from a variety of specialty areas including infectious diseases, molecular pathology, oncology, neuropathology, bone and joint pathology, avian pathology, aquatic pathobiology, parasitic diseases, and topics in clinical pathology. Original research and a scholarly thesis or dissertation are required for MS (thesis) and PhD programs.

Activities of the Department of Pathobiology also include instruction in veterinary medicine and graduate curricula relevant to parasitology, microbiology, immunology, molecular genetics, epidemiology, preventative medicine and laboratory animal medicine, pursuit of basic and applied research, and provision of diagnostic services in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, parasitology, and microbiology. Cooperative relationships exist between the Department and the other 2 academic departments, Scott-Ritchey Research Center, Animal Health Research Program, State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and other colleges and units on campus.

Programmatic strengths include strong interdisciplinary research programs, opportunity to combine significant teaching experience with residency and research training, and commitment to mentorship. Other enrichments include seminars and journal clubs, training in research proposal writing, and participation in scientific meetings.

Facilities
The Department of Pathobiologyfs well-equipped clinical laboratories, diagnostic pathology support laboratories, and research laboratories provide excellent facilities for conducting residency and research training. Included among a broad range of departmental laboratory and support facilities available to the student are molecular genetics, electron microscopy, flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics, automated immunohistochemistry, and computer laboratories. A variety of core facilities located in other departments of the College and University also are readily accessible to residents and graduate students. The Universityfs library system offers extensive electronic journal resources and has a branch library in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Auburn University is a comprehensive public, land-grant institution located in Auburn, AL. It is the Statefs largest campus, with more than 22,000 students enrolled in 12 colleges and schools. Veterinary Medicine was established as a degree program at Auburn in 1907.
