Description
of Externship:
The core program is necropsy examination of domestic with review of the histopathology
of cases and biopsy samples with the pathologist(s) on duty. The student can
observe testing in bacteriology, virology, and toxicology as well, and assist
with clinical pathology samples (cytology). Self-study glass slides are available.
Occasional field trips to premises where there are active disease outbreaks
can be arranged. Students are responsible for their expenses. Housing can be
difficult
to locate in Laramie during academic sessions (late Jan – early May; late
August – late December). Faculty members can sometimes assist students
secure university accommodation either through the university’s student
housing unit (Residence Life and Dining Services – http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/reslife-dining/)
or through other entities on campus that have housing for visiting scholars.
The latter is most likely to be secured if we are contacted well in advance
of a proposed start date. We have a separate externship for students who come
here
specifically to work on wildlife diseases. There is financial support for students
coming here on the wildlife externship. The experience will be meaningful to
any veterinary student, but those who have completed their school's pathology
training benefit most.
