Description of Externship:

Externships in Comparative Pathology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine are typically 2-4 weeks in duration depending on the structure of the student's program. Externships are open to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students. In a typical year two to four externs are accepted.

The externship consists of the following:

  1. participation in the diagnostic pathology service consisting of post-mortem examination of a variety of animal species with an emphasis on primates and rodents;
  2. completion of an externship project comprising a descriptive study of a pathologic entity or a research project in comparative pathology to be presented at the conclusion of the externship; and
  3. participation in relevant weekly meetings (Comparative Pathology Conference, Comparative Medicine Journal Club, and Laboratory Animal Medicine Grand Rounds).

In addition to externships, other training opportunities are available listed at http://www.wfubmc.edu/pathology/training/vet_programs.htm

WFUSM Pathology Staff consists of 2 board-certified veterinary anatomic pathologists, three pathology Fellows, and a pathology Resident. Unique aspects of the program include our group's focus on primate pathology and the potential for interactions with MD pathologists and other researchers at WFUSM.

Applications will be accepted from interested veterinary students in an AVMA-accredited school. Application requirements will include a letter of interest, a copy of your most recent curriculum vita, and (if applicable) a letter of request from the appropriate school official.

All participants will be considered volunteers, and are required to receive OSHA and ACUC training, to have a recent negative tuberculosis test, and to adhere to any other applicable state, federal, and institutional drug and safety regulations.
