Description of Externship:

The pathology laboratory is part of the FLI, located on the Isle of Riems at the Baltic Sea coast. It provides broad expertise in livestock, poultry, laboratory and small animal as well as zoo including fish pathology and scientific support for the other research groups, investigators and programs of the FLI. Research is mainly focussed on pathobiology and mechanisms of viral diseases: characterization of pathogenicity and virulence of infectious agents using histopathological, histochemical, immunohistological and molecular techniques, investigations on the cellular and tissue tropism, the virus-host interactions, including the molecular and immunopathogenesis, development of new diagnostic tools enabling the detection of antigens and nucleic acids in tissue sections are the main tasks.

Several post-mortem rooms are available for the different levels of biosecurity (BSL 2, BSL3 and BSL 4-VET). Currently, experimental studies are performed on European bat lyssavirus infection, pseudorabies, avian and porcine influenza, classical swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease, bovine leukemia, infectious laryngotracheitis and RHD. Research opportunities may be available for the student with a variety of investigators. The laboratory has various self-study aids and postgraduate training in veterinary pathology required for preparation for the board certification exam of the American (ACVP) or European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP) is offered to residents and suitable candidates under the guidance of an ACVP board certified pathologist. The extern has a weekly opportunity to participate in pathology training also in the AFIP Wednesday Slide Conference.
