Update on Bioterrorism

"Bioterrorism: Surveillance, Response and the Practicing Pathologist"
From a "late breakers" session at the ACVP Annual Meeting, Salt Lake City, December 2, 2001

Since the events of September 11, 2001, and the anthrax attacks that followed, a somber realization has emerged that we have entered a new era of international terrorism that, for years to come, will threaten the quality of life worldwide. These new threats will involve activities aimed at provoking economic, social, and political chaos and destabilization, as well as at instilling fear for our health and well-being. Targets of these activities may not necessarily be restricted to human beings, but can include any arena for which destruction or damage could instill public panic and undermine economic, social, or political confidence. Pathologists may benefit from increased awareness of these issues.
