ACVP Young Investigator Awards Poster Competition

The ACVP offers a Young Investigator Awards (YIA) Poster Competition in four categories:

Diagnostic Pathology
Experimental Disease
Natural Disease
Toxicologic Pathology

If fewer than 5 abstracts are submitted within a specific category, these abstracts may be combined with another category by the YIA Chair.  Each of these categories will offer up to three monetary awards:

First Place: $500
Second Place: $300
Third Place: $200

This ACVP awards program recognizes quality poster presentations by veterinary pathology residents and graduate students. The posters will be judged by College Diplomates representing several specialty groups, during the Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas on November 15-19, 2008. Individuals eligible for this competition must be veterinarians currently enrolled in a residency or graduate program in veterinary pathology or that have completed such a program after June 30, 2007. The poster must present original work of the competitor completed during the period of residency or graduate training.

Undergraduate veterinary students still enrolled in a College of Veterinary Medicine are also encouraged to submit posters for the meeting, but they will be judged under a separate category and will be eligible for awards dedicated to student posters (for more information on student poster awards, see the information below.

Competitors must:

  • Be the first author of the presentation
  • Should have performed the major portion of the work
  • May submit only one poster for consideration
  • Register and attend the ACVP Annual Meeting
  • Abstracts must be submitted by June 2, 2008 to the ACVP website.
  • Competitors are also encouraged to be present at their poster display during the Focused Poster Session on Saturday evening, November 15 from 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. during the Opening Reception; however this is not mandatory.

Awards will be announced at the ACVP Business Meeting, on Tuesday, November 18, at the Annual Meeting in San Antonio. Recipients are asked to display their winning poster on Wednesday morning from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon in the Young Investigator Award poster session.

Entries, as well as competition category, should be indicated on the abstract form. Please note that any additional award a competitor applies for may dictate the category of YIA that he/she is placed in (e.g., if a competitor requests to be entered in the ACVP/AAVLD Travel Award, they will be placed in the Diagnostic Pathology category, or if competing for the STP Award they will be placed in the Toxicologic Pathology category).  Thus, please ensure that your abstract is in the appropriate YIA category for the awards that you would like to compete for.

If there are any additional questions, please contact Lindsay Tomlinson at lindsay.tomlinson@bms.com or Jane Shepard at the ACVP Executive Office at meetings@acvp.org.

Diagnostic Pathology Travel Award

Purpose
The American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) and the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) encourage trainees in veterinary pathology to participate in the Annual Meetings of both organizations.  The second annual ACVP Diagnostic Pathology Travel Award is available to graduate students and/or residents in veterinary pathology for participation in the Annual Meeting of the AAVLD.

  • The recipient will be awarded a $1,000 grant from the ACVP to help defray travel and lodging costs associated with attending the AAVLD Annual Meeting.
  • The recipient will be granted a waiver for the AAVLD meeting registration fee.

Eligibility

  • Candidates for the Diagnostic Pathology Travel Award must be veterinarians or other medical professionals currently enrolled in a full-time residency program and/or graduate program in veterinary pathology or a related discipline in the U.S. or Canada.  Candidates who have completed a graduate and/or residency program in veterinary pathology within a year before the AAVLD meeting are eligible to compete.

Application and Selection Procedure

  • The presentation must represent original work of the applicant completed during his/her residency or graduate program.
  • Five or more oral presentations will be invited from abstracts submitted for the Young Investigator Award for the Diagnostic Pathology Specialty Group session at the ACVP Annual Meeting. Therefore, finalists for this award may be required to give both an oral and a poster presentation if competing for both the YIA and the ACVP/AAVLD Diagnostic Pathology Travel Awards. The applicant should follow the guidelines for application for the Young Investigator Award in Diagnostic Pathology to be eligible for this award. On the website, an applicant can choose either poster (if also applying for YIA) or oral presentation and still be eligible for this award, but only the travel award finalists will be asked to do both poster and oral presentations.
  • An independent panel of judges will select the best oral presentation by a trainee, and the recipient will attend the next AAVLD Annual Meeting to present the same oral presentation.
  • If the selected candidate is unable to attend the next AAVLD Annual Meeting, then the runner-up will receive the award.

Timeline

  • Trainees will be notified by mid-September if their abstract has been selected for oral presentation in the Diagnostic Pathology Specialty Group Session at the ACVP Annual Meeting of the same year.
  • The recipient of the award will be announced at the ACVP Business Meeting on Tuesday, November 18.

2008 ACVP Veterinary Student Poster Award

ACVP is offering an award for veterinary students which requires submission of an abstract and a quality poster presentation of pathology-related research or case work material at the 2008 Annual Meeting. The posters will be judged by Student Chapter Sub-Committee representatives during the Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas on November 15-19, 2008.

Entitled the “Student Poster Award”, the criteria for submission are as follows:

  • May submit only one poster for consideration
  • Presence at the poster display is required at a time to be determined.
  • Individuals or groups eligible for this competition must be currently enrolled veterinary students. The poster must present original work of the competitor or group completed during the period of student training.

There will be two awards in 2008 – one for an experimental disease poster and one for a clinical poster.  The recipients of these awards receive a $250 monetary award (for group entries, the award is split amongst members) and an additional award of $250 will go to the ACVP-recognized Student Chapter (if the recipient/s is/are a member of a Student Chapter).

2008 Society of Toxicologic Pathology Student Speaker Award

The Society of Toxicologic Pathology (STP) is pleased to announce the third annual STP Student Speaker Award to encourage students to pursue careers in the field of Toxicologic Pathology.  The award recipient will receive free registration plus $1,000 to be used for lodging and travel to the 2009 STP Annual Meeting, which will take place June 20-25, 2009, in Washington, DC, and will be asked to present the same presentation at that meeting.

The award will be given to the resident or graduate student whose oral platform presentation is judged best among up to five finalists at the annual joint meetings of the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ASVCP) and the American College of Veterinary Pathology (ACVP) in San Antonio, Texas.  The finalists will be selected by the judges from abstracts submitted to the ASVCP/ACVP meeting.

Finalists for this award may be required to give both an oral and a poster presentation if competing in both YIA and the Society of Toxicologic Pathology Award. The applicant should follow the guidelines for application for the Young Investigator Award in Toxicologic Pathology to be eligible for this award. On the website, an applicant can choose either poster (if also applying for YIA) or oral presentation and still be eligible for this award, but only the STP Award finalists will be asked to do both poster and oral presentations.

To be eligible to compete for this award, students must have obtained a degree in veterinary medicine and be enrolled in a residency or graduate program in toxicologic pathology/general pathology/clinical pathology or a related discipline.  The oral presentation must describe original work of the competitor involving clinical or experimental research that relates to toxicologic pathology.  The presentation content may include in vitro or in vivo studies.  The award selection will be determined by an independent panel of judges and will be based on the scientific content of the presentation, composition of the abstract, clarity of presentation, and the presenter’s ability to answer questions. Trainees in clinical and/or morphologic pathology are encouraged to apply for the award.
