2006 ACVP Veterinary Student Poster Award

ACVP is offering an award for veterinary students which requires submission  of an abstract and a quality poster presentation of pathology-related research  or case work material at the 2006 Annual Meeting. The posters will be judged  by Student Chapter Sub-Committee representatives during the Annual Meeting  in Tucson on December 2-6, 2006.

Entitled the “Student Poster Award”, the criteria for submission  are as follows:

  • Be the first author of the presentation for individual entries or  for group entries, a clear designation of group members who contributed equally  (equivalent to first author)
  • Should have performed the major portion of the work
  • May submit only one poster for consideration
  • Presence at the poster display is required during the Focused Poster  Session  -- Tuesday, December 5 from 12:00 noon-1:30 p.m. (group submissions  can rotate who is present at the poster, if they wish).
  • Individuals or groups eligible for this competitionmust  be currently enrolled veterinary students. The poster must present  original work of the competitor or group completed during the period of student training.

There will be two awards in 2006 – one for an experimental disease poster  and one for a clinical poster.  The recipients of these awards receive  a $250 monetary award (for group entries, the award is split amongst members)  and an additional award of $250 will go to the ACVP-recognized Student Chapter  (if the recipient/s is/are a member of a Student Chapter).

Awards will be announced at the ACVP Business Meeting on Tuesday, December  5, at the Annual Meeting in Tucson. If there are any additional questions,  please contact Rani Sellers (rani.sellers@roche.com) or Jane  Shepard at the ACVP Executive Office at meetings@acvp.org.

Abstracts must be submitted by September 1, 2006 to the ACVP Office.  Further  instructions for submission will be available on the website this summer.

  1. Place your abstract in a word document and attach it to an e-mail addressed to the ACVP Office at meetings@acvp.org. Abstracts must be received by e-mail no later than 12:00 midnight CST on September 1, 2006.
  2. Submission of your abstract application provides assurance:

    a) Of adherence to the rules and scientific validity of the presentation.
    b) That all investigations involving animals reported in the abstract have been conducted in compliance with guidelines for experimental procedures as set forth in the Belmont Report or NIH "Guidelines for the Care and Use of Animals" as applicable.
    c) That this work will not be presented in any form at a national or international meeting prior to this meeting.

  3. Abstracts should be informative, containing:

    a) The study's specific objectives, unless given by the title.
    b) Brief statement of methods, if pertinent.
    c) Summary of results obtained.
    d) Statement of conclusions. It is NOT SATISFACTORY to state "the results will be discussed."

  6. Please type the title of your abstract in all capital letters. Include a listing of all authors (use initials for first and middle name and spell out the last name, do not include degrees) and their corresponding departments and affiliation/institution.

Example: TRANSCRIPTIONAL PHENOTYPING OF CIRCULATING ENDOTHELIAL CELLS FROM SORTED RAT WHOLE BLOOD. M.S. Scicchitano, R. Thomas, D. McFarland, P. Narayanan, H. Thomas, L. Tierney, and L. Schwartz. Department of Safety Assessment, GlaxoSmithKline, King of Prussia, PA.

  7. Include the following information in the body of your e-mail:

    - Full Name of the Corresponding Author (person to receive all communications regarding the abstract submission)
    - Current e-mail address
    - Telephone number where you can be reached/or a message left

Sample Abstract
TRANSCRIPTIONAL PHENOTYPING OF CIRCULATING ENDOTHELIAL CELLS FROM SORTED RAT WHOLE BLOOD. M. Scicchitano, R. Thomas, D. McFarland, P. Narayanan, H. Thomas, L. Tierney, and L. Schwartz, Department of Safety Assessment, GlaxoSmithKline, King of Prussia, PA.

Vascular toxicity in pre-clinical toxicology species presents a hurdle for progressing new chemical entities into clinical development. Further, monitoring of drug-induced vascular toxicity is hampered by lack of sensitive and predictive biomarkers of vascular injury. Circulating endothelial cells (CEC) have recently been identified as possible biomarkers for vascular injury. In normal rat peripheral blood, small subpopulations of putative circulating endothelial cells show variable degrees of DiI-Ac-LDL uptake and vWF and CD31 cell surface expression. To assess the utility of CEC as potential biomarkers of vascular injury, further characterization of these cell populations was performed using immunophenotypic labeling, followed by flow cytometric cell sorting and transcriptional profiling of unique subpopulations.....

Confirmation E-mail
Each corresponding author will receive an e-mail confirmation from the ACVP Office verifying receipt of the abstract submission. That e-mail will be sent to you within 72 hours of abstract receipt.

Please keep a copy of your confirmation e-mail

If you do not receive an e-mail response within 72 hours, the ACVP Office did not receive your submission. In that case, it is your responsibility to contact the ACVP Office (meetings@acvp.org).
