Dr. Lairmore Elected as Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology

 

Dr. Michael Lairmore, Immediate Past-President of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) and Professor in the Department of Veterinary Biosciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, The Ohio State University has been elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.  As newly elected Fellow, he will be recognized at the 111th American Society of Microbiology Meeting in New Orleans on Tuesday, May 24th, 2011.
 
Dr. Lairmore, an internationally authority in retrovirology and pathology, has contributed fundamental knowledge of viral pathogenesis.  Using unique expertise in virology and pathology he contributed pioneering studies in animal models of human retroviruses, defined novel virus-host relationships and created paradigm shifting approaches mechanisms of viral diseases.  Drs. Lairmore is a member of the Viral Oncology Program of the Ohio State Comprehensive Cancer Center and Center for Retrovirus Research.  He is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute through a Program Project Grant (P01 CA100730)  to study retroviruses as models of lymphocyte transformation and disease.  Dr. Lairmore is also Director of an NIH postdoctoral training grant (T-32 RR07073) focused training veterinarians in animal models of human diseases.
 
The American Academy of Microbiology (http://academy.asm.org/) is the honorific leadership group within the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the world's oldest and largest life science organization. The mission of the Academy is to recognize scientists for outstanding contributions to microbiology and provide microbiological expertise in the service of science and the public.  The Academy serves as a resource to governmental agencies, industry, ASM and the larger scientific and lay communities by convening colloquia to address critical issues in microbiology. The Academy, through its sponsorship of the American College of Microbiology, certifies outstanding microbiologists and immunologists in clinical and industrial specialties and accredits postdoctoral training programs in clinical and public health microbiology and immunology. The Academy manages ASM's scientific achievement awards program, recognizing outstanding achievement and potential in all areas of microbiology. The Academy convenes four to five colloquia a year for in-depth analysis of critical issues in microbiology.
