Australia Day honours for Alders and Jubb

 

Robyn Alders, who holds veterinary science degrees from the University of Sydney (1983-1985) and the Australian National University (1989) was made an Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia on January 26 for “distinguished service to veterinary science as a researcher and educator, to the maintenance of food security in developing countries through livestock management and disease control programs, and to the Australian poultry industry”.

The former resident of Taralga, NSW, is now based at Boston’s Tufts Cummings school of veterinary medicine and is the principal investigator of the Respond Project, part of the USAID Emerging Pandemic Threats Program, and she has made significant contributions to the control of Newcastle Disease in African and Asian communities that rely on poultry for their livelihood. Werribee Zoo founder Professor Kenneth Jubb (retired), of Hoppers Crossing, Victoria, was made a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for “service to veterinary science and pathology”. The former Melbourne University dean of veterinary science (1969-1990) is a renowned pathologist and co-wrote Pathology of Domestic Animals with Professor Peter Kennedy, published 1963. The former Zoos Victoria chairman was instrumental in establishing Werribee Zoo in the mid-1970s and helped establish veterinary schools at Perth’s Murdoch University and Putra University, Malaysia.
