University of Guelph
Guelph, Ontario, Canada
Programs Offered
The Department of Pathobiology in the Ontario Veterinary College at the University
of Guelph offers M.Sc., Ph.D., D.V.Sc. and Diploma programs in veterinary
pathology. The Doctor of Veterinary Science (D.V.Sc.) program is a unique
3-year degree program of clinically or diagnostically oriented education
in conjunction with a research thesis. The M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in veterinary
pathology provide some discipline experience but are more focused on research.
The graduate programs and faculty are organized in various fields of study.
Most students seeking eligibility for the ACVP examinations are in the Veterinary
Pathology field (general anatomic and clinical pathology) or Comparative
Pathology field (diseases of birds, fish, laboratory animals, zoo animal
and wildlife). Two other fields in the department are Immunology and Veterinary
Infectious Diseases.
Qualifications
Students in applied veterinary pathology areas must have a D.V.M. or equivalent
background. For admission to graduate degree programs, students must meet
the admission standards of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
Environment
The city of Guelph is a pleasant community of 100,000 people, located in southern
Ontario’s technology triangle, approximately one hour west of Toronto,
and close to six universities. The University of Guelph is one of the highest
ranked comprehensive universities in Canada. As the oldest veterinary college
in Canada and the United States, The Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) has
been educating veterinarians since 1862. Ontario Veterinary College has a
collaborative partnership with the University's Animal Health Laboratory
(AHL) which provides anatomic and clinical pathology, parasitology, clinical
microbiology, toxicology and other laboratory services to the Veterinary
Teaching Hospital (VTH) and to veterinarians in private practice.
The Department of Pathobiology thus provides a strong interdisciplinary education environment that presently involves approximately 65 graduate students, of whom about 15 are in Veterinary Pathology. Students obtain supervised practical education in diagnostic pathology by cases submitted through various services. Most small and large animal cases come through the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the Field Service of the Ontario Veterinary College. The fish pathology laboratory serves the aquaculture industry across Canada. The avian pathology laboratories provide diagnostic services for poultry submitted to the AHL and pet birds from the VTH. Wildlife and zoo animals come from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, CCWHC program (Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre), local zoos and game farms. Laboratory animal cases come from the various research facilities. Research education is obtained in the laboratories and research programs of faculty in the Department of Pathobiology and other cooperating departments of the Ontario Veterinary College.
FACULTY
Adjunct/Associate Faculty and Staff in the Animal Health Laboratory
Program Strengths
The department and AHL collectively have a wide range of expertise and facilities
for state-of-the-art diagnostic and investigative pathology and for the academic
study of disease in animals. There are well developed basic and applied graduate
courses and various case discussion sessions and learning resources available
to students in the pathology programs. Students in pathology have access
to case material handled by the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of OVC and by
the Animal Health Laboratory (AHL). The partnership between OVC and AHL and
the location of the academic department, diagnostic and research laboratories
and the VTH under one roof enhances opportunities for access to diagnostic
materials, procedures and expertise.
Applications
Various funded positions are available periodically. Qualified applicants are
encouraged to apply at any time. Please consult the Department web site for
