Training Programs

University of Georgia
Athens, GA

Programs Offered
A combined residency/graduate program is available in either anatomic or clinical pathology. A two-year program leading to the Master of Science degree and a four-year program leading to the PhD degree can be pursued. Non-degree residency programs in anatomic and clinical pathology may also be offered (please inquire).

Facilities
The Department of Pathology is part of the College of Veterinary Medicine. It is closely associated with the other groups in the college, including the Poultry Diagnostic Research Center, Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic and Investigational Laboratory, and the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study. The department also maintains close ties with pathologists and other scientists in the area, including those at the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service Laboratory, the USDA-ARS Southeastern Poultry Research Laboratory, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Zoo Atlanta, and the Georgia Aquarium. Pathologists from all of these units are faculty or adjunct faculty within the department and participate actively in seminars and various research and training activities. The department maintains necropsy, histopathology, clinical pathology, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy facilities. The college maintains central facilities for flow cytometry, laboratory animal medicine, and monoclonal antibody production and analysis. The university provides central facilities for molecular genetics.

Community
The University of Georgia is located in Athens, Georgia, approximately 60 miles east of Atlanta. The city provides a wealth of sporting, cultural, and intellectual activities, and is strategically located with access to other metropolitan areas, historic sites, and recreational facilities. The climate is mild. A major benefit of the program at Athens is the ability to interface and interact with one of the largest groups of veterinary pathologists anywhere in the world.

Stipends and Maintenance
The College of Veterinary Medicine provides stipends for graduate students and residents. The department funds two graduate students and three residents per year. Funding for additional positions can be obtained through extramural research monies or from the college or university for an exceptionally strong candidate. The cost of living in Athens is modest compared to many other areas in the US.
