New England Regional Primate Research Center
Harvard Medical School
Southborough, MA
Programs Offered
The Division of Comparative Pathology of the New England Primate Research
Center offers three years of post-doctoral training in veterinary and comparative
pathology, including anatomic pathology and experimental pathology. Trainees
are appointed in the Department of Pathology of the Harvard Medical School.
The program is tailored to the individual, with specialized training in electron
microscopy, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, polymerase chain reaction,
confocal microscopy, cell culture, and flow cytometry available for use in
diagnostic and experimental pathology. Training in research is emphasized,
stressing the use of animal models, particularly nonhuman primates, to study
disease pathogenesis. Areas of concentration include infectious diseases, particularly
lentiviral infections, and basic mechanisms of inflammation. The training program
meets the requirements of the ACVP, with the specific aim of developing independent
investigators. Six NCRR, NIH-supported three-year training positions are available.
Facilities
The Division of Comparative Pathology provides diagnostic pathology service
for all divisions of the New England Primate Research Center, primarily for
nonhuman primates in the breeding colonies and experimental animals, as well
as occasional outside consultations. Other divisions within the center that
are available for collaboration and/or consultation include primate medicine,
microbiology, immunology, behavioral biology, tumor virology and neurobiology.
There is a medical library in the center.
Community
The New England Primate Research Center is located in Southborough, approximately
25 miles west of Boston, with convenient access to the vast medical communities
both in Boston, and in Worcester to the west. The center is situated on 120 acres
adjacent to conservation land.
Stipends
The training positions are NIH-funded, and stipends are determined by years of
post- doctoral experience. Currently (2007), the stipends range from $32,000
to $51,000.
