Training Programs

Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission
Little Rock, AR

Programs Offered
The Diagnostic Laboratory offers 1 to 3 month externships in veterinary pathology for third and fourth year veterinary students. These externships are co-sponsored by the Davis Foundation for the Advancement of Veterinary and Comparative Pathology. Students learn more about disease processes by performing necropsy examinations and in assisting the microbiologic, toxicologic, and histopathologic evaluations on all species (pets, poultry, livestock, and zoo animals). Externs may also participate in an active clinical pathology service with many cytology cases. Previous externs have successfully entered veterinary pathology post-graduate programs.

Facilities
The Livestock and Poultry Commission Diagnostic Lab is in Little Rock, AR. It is a full service laboratory, including clinical pathology, serology, toxicology, virology, microbiology, and histopathology. There are 4 veterinary diagnosticians, 1 being ACVP board certified and 2 board eligible. About 12 other technologists work in the laboratory also and are very willing to share their knowledge and lab procedures. A teaching microscope and photomicroscope are available and numerous microscope slide sets and video programs can be studied. The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, is 5 miles away and offers additional self-study laser discs and a library.

A laboratory is also at Springdale, AR, and can periodically accept a student. This laboratory is near the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville) and works with all species but primarily poultry.

Community
The Laboratory is located within a pleasant area of west Little Rock with nearby motels and restaurants. The scenic Ozark Mountains begin about 50 miles north of Little Rock. Dormitory facilities are often available at the Medical School, 5 miles away by direct city bus.

Also, furnished apartments are available. The Little Rock Zoo and Memorial Stadium are adjacent to the medical school.

Stipends and Maintenance
