Residency and Graduate Research Training
in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology. The Department
of Pathobiological Sciences at Louisiana State University School
of Veterinary Medicine (LSU-SVM) has a position available for
a 3-year anatomic pathology residency program beginning August1,
2010. Anatomic pathology residents are trained in the recognition
and interpretation of gross and histological lesions, molecular
diagnostics, and integration of pathological and ancillary laboratory
testing into diagnosis. Case materials for the program come from
the LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the Louisiana Animal
Disease Diagnostic Laboratory. In addition to biopsy and
necropsy case loads, residents are expected to participate in
teaching, attend seminars, and complete core courses. Flexible
options are available for those wishing to pursue graduate training
either during or subsequent to completion of the residency. Areas
of active research within the department and school include cellular
and molecular biology, infectious diseases, vector-borne diseases,
oncology, gene therapy, toxicology, and aquatic pathobiology.
Dedicated, on-site, core facilities at LSU-SVM include flow cytometry,
cell culture, animal resources (housing, surgery, BL-3 suites,
whole rodent imaging), molecular biology (microarray spotting
and analysis, real time PCR, and DNA and RNA synthesis and analysis
systems), proteomics, microscopy (scanning and transmission electron
microscopy, laser dissection, laser confocal, and fluorescence)
and vector development units (adenovirus, herpesvirus, and retrovirus). Additional
graduate training is available through the Pennington Biomedical
Research Center (http://www.pbrc.edu) and the Tulane National
Primate Research Center (http://www.tnprc.tulane.edu/index.shtml). Highly
competitive salaries are available during the graduate research
training portion of the program via an NIH T32 training grant
jointly held by the LSU-SVM and the Tulane National Primate Research
Center. A DVM or equivalent degree is required, and GRE
scores are required for graduate school admission. The
stipend starts at $30,000 per annum and tuition is waived. A
curriculum vita, letter of intent and 3 letters of reference
should be sent to Dr. Timothy Morgan, Department of Pathobiological
Sciences, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA 70803. tmorgan@vetmed.lsu.edu. Visit our website at www.vetmed.lsu.edu/pbs/.
