Combined Residency/PhD Training in Anatomic Pathology. Washington
State University offers anatomic pathology residency/PhD training
positions for DVMs for 2010. The program combines anatomic
pathology residency training in a fully accredited diagnostic laboratory
(http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts_waddl/)
with state-of-the-art training in biomedical research leading to
the PhD degree (http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-vmp/graduate/AnatomicPath.aspx).
Trainees are eligible for American College of Veterinary Pathologists
(ACVP) certification and are highly recruited for positions in
academia, biotechnology and pharmaceutical research, and national
laboratories. Pathology training occurs under the guidance
of 9 ACVP and one ACLAM board certified pathologists. Twelve
trainees completed the combined program in the past 6 years; all
twelve successfully passed the ACVP board certification examination. The
PhD program emphasizes infectious disease research, including diagnosis
and control of emerging diseases, pathogenesis, host defense mechanisms,
and controlling disease at the human-animal interface. Faculty
are internationally recognized (http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/research_vmp/)
and experienced in mentoring trainees in state-of-the-art laboratories
well funded by NIH, USDA, Grayson Foundation, Morris Animal Foundation,
ACVP/STP Coalition, the Welcome Trust, and the WSU School for Global
Animal Health (http://globalhealth.wsu.edu/). For
qualified applicants, numerous research opportunities are also
available within the USDA Animal Diseases Research Unit (http://www.ars.usda.gov/main/site_main.htm?modecode=53-48-10-00),
which is fully integrated into department. Starting stipend is
$35,436 and may be supplemented by specific fellowships for outstanding
candidates. Preference will be given to U.S. citizens or
