Combined Veterinary Clinical Pathology Residency/PhD Graduate Program to begin Summer, 2010. As part of the most comprehensive health sciences center in America, the Department of Veterinary Biosciences at The Ohio State University offers outstanding training opportunities for students whose career goals include specialty education in veterinary clinical pathology and graduate education leading to a PhD. Success of the program is demonstrated by sustained extramural research funding and an excellent record of graduates who successfully pass the certifying examination of the ACVP. Pathology training utilizes laboratories at Ohio State University which support necropsy, surgical pathology, and clinical pathology services for the large caseload in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, regional practitioners, the Columbus Zoo, and the University Comparative Pathology & Mouse Phenotyping Shared Resource which provides diagnostic pathology support to the University Laboratory Animal Resources and investigators utilizing animal models of disease with an emphasis on genetically modified mice. Characterization of genetically-modified mice is supported by an NIH training grant and draws upon submissions to the Phenotyping Shared Resource. Areas of research include cellular and molecular biology, oncology, microbiology and immunology, pathophysiology, and epidemiology. Trainees may interact with Ohio Department of Agriculture scientists, USDA/APHIS Foreign Animal Disease specialists and the university’s multidisciplinary faculty to pursue research interests in the area of emerging diseases. Stipends begin at $30,750, and successful applicants will receive a $2000 bonus to apply toward the cost of educational supplies. Additional benefits include paid tuition and contributions to student health insurance. A DVM/VMD from an AVMA-accredited institution is preferred.
