With a current business volume of more than $60 million, Southern Research Institute employs 600 professional, technical and support personnel. The Drug Development Division of Southern Research Institute conducts comprehensive pre-clinical drug development and testing as well as basic research in drug design and synthesis, pharmaceutical formulations, toxicology, virology, microbiology, and pharmacology. While contracts with various governmental agencies continue to be a significant part of our work, our current emphasis is on the promotion of new business with pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms as well as other industrial sponsors. We are also committed to investment in new technologies. Current growth initiatives include toxicogenomics and the preclinical safety testing of gene therapies (we are a Toxicology Center for the National Gene Vector Program). The Pathology Group of the Safety Assessment Department has an immediate opening for the position of Pathology Manager. We are seeking candidates with a DVM/VMD degree, board certification by the ACVP, and at least 5 years relevant experience in the field of toxicologic pathology and management. Responsibilities include the supervision of approximately 30 professional and technical staff that comprise the anatomic and clinical pathology groups. The successful candidate will have excellent leadership and interpersonal skills and should have the ability to promote interaction between Pathology and other disciplines within Southern Research. The ability to communicate with clients in the design and implementation of toxicology studies is essential. Development of collaborative research with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (a Southern Research Institute affiliate) is encouraged. The individual will also be responsible for assisting in the histopathological evaluation of toxicity and carcinogenicity studies involving a variety of laboratory animal species and in writing technical reports. An understanding of the mechanisms of drug toxicity and carcinogenesis is essential, and experience with transgenic animal models is desirable.
