Veterinary Pathologist
International Zoo Veterinary Group
Leeds, United Kingdom
International Zoo Veterinary Group (IZVG) was founded in 1976, and
is the largest freelance zoo medicine practice in the world, working
exclusively with non-domestic species. Our pathology division was established
in 2003, and provides dedicated anatomic pathology services for the
practice’s zoo, aquarium and wildlife conservation work, which
is genuinely international. It is independent from but based within
the fully equipped and staffed laboratories of Nationwide Laboratories,
Leeds. This is a long-standing arrangement ensuring on-site expertise
in clinical pathology, microbiology, parasitology and histology. The
laboratory is situated near Leeds, approximately 5 minutes from Leeds
Bradford International Airport, and with excellent road and rail communications.
The role: In a new post alongside our existing veterinary
pathologist, and supported by zoological medicine clinical specialists,
you will be responsible jointly for a caseload that comprises non-domestic
mammalian (particularly primate), avian, and lower vertebrate species,
including significant numbers of marine aquarium fish. Histopathology
predominates, for the practice’s own clients, and by referral
from a number of external laboratories, but gross post mortem examinations
are a frequent and irreplaceable feature of our work. These occasionally
necessitate travel off-site. A network of external collaborators enables
us to source additional diagnostic testing when necessary. A number
of opportunities exist for input into conservation projects in association
with field biologists.
The person: MRCVS (or immediate eligibility) and
a postgraduate qualification in veterinary pathology are essential
(DipRCPath/FRCPath, DipACVP, DipECVP, or equivalent), as are robust
diagnostic and communication skills in English. Relevant experience
in non-domestic animal pathology is desirable, but not essential, although
you will be expected to demonstrate a genuine interest and enthusiasm
for comparative pathology. Experience of research methods and a track
record of publication would also be desirable.
Remuneration: The post carries a competitive salary,
along with a number of additional benefits including medical insurance.
Flexible working arrangements will be considered. Relevant CPD is actively
encouraged and funded.
Contact: Informal enquiries are strongly encouraged,
prior to application, with the current pathologist Dr Mark Stidworthy
by email (M.Stidworthy@izvg.co.uk)
or telephone (0113 391 9710 (laboratory) or 07771 567506 (mobile)).
The practice website may be found at: www.izvg.co.uk.
Applications, including a letter briefly outlining past experience
and future goals, a curriculum vitae, and the names and contact details
of two individuals who may be contacted for references should be sent
to: admin@izvg.co.uk. The post
is available immediately and applications will be considered until
a suitable candidate is identified.
