The University of Calgary, Faculty of Veterinary
Medicine is currently looking for a Regular Full-time, Diagnostics
Services Unit (DSU) Manager.
This position reports to the Distributed Veterinary Learning Community
(DVLC) Director, and working in close association with the Chief of Diagnostic
Services and UCVM Diagnostic Services Committee, the Diagnostic Services
Unit (DSU) Manager is primarily responsible for management and technical
operation of the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine’s
(UCVM) diagnostic.
The primary location will be the Clinical Skills Building, Spy Hill Campus,
but will require travel to the Foothills Campus Health Sciences Centre
and to partner locations in and around Calgary. The laboratory work
environment has the inherent potential for exposure to dangerous materials
and situations, however risk of exposure or injury is substantially decreased
through application of safe work practices and protocols.
Once UCVM is fully operational, there will be 120 undergraduate students,
around 120 graduate students, a large number of faculty and external researchers
(60+) and an extended network of partners participating in the DVLC submitting
requests for diagnostic services.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include
but are not limited to):
- Responsible for co-coordinating the cost effective delivery of histology,
pathology, clinical pathology and other laboratory diagnostic services
to meet UCVM’s clinical and research needs, tracking the financial
operations of the DSU, and ensuring an accurate computerized records
system.
- Actively participate in the design and development of the histology
laboratory, the necropsy suite, other diagnostic laboratory services
and staffing needs within the DSU.
- Capable of providing technical oversight of the laboratory diagnostic
services and will be expected to provide advice on the nature and extent
of services offered.
- Knowledge and expertise in development and delivery of laboratory diagnostic
services to a variety of clients and discretionary decision making that
impact programs, services, undergraduate teaching, and research activities.
- Operating within a predetermined budget, the incumbent must understand
and apply sound financial tracking and budgetary principles to ensure
the effective use of materials and personnel.
- Manage staff, with responsibilities including recruitment, assignment
of duties, authorizing overtime, coaching, performance evaluation, and
performance management up to and including discharge.
- Assess and deploy professional staff within the DSU, assist in their
professional development, and provide technical laboratory support in
either periods of high volume or periods of unforeseen staff shortages.
- Use flexibility and creativity in responding to the diagnostic needs
of a variety of users in a timely manner.
Requirements:
- Related post-secondary credential (preference will be given to candidates
with a degree) and a minimum of two years work experience within a laboratory
management environment is required. An equivalent combination of
education and work experience may be considered, such as relevant post-secondary
courses combined with certification by the Canadian Society for Medical
Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
- Thorough understanding of at least some of the typically offered diagnostic
services, including tissue processing, histology sample preparation,
immunohistochemical techniques, microbiology and/or virology, hematology
or other diagnostic tests.
- Basic understanding of cost and labour accounting and financial tracking
considered an asset.
- Understanding of and ability to work using industry specific laboratory
safety standards.
- Proficient with computers and familiar with laboratory diagnostic services
software.
- Excellent MS Office Suite skills as well as communication, organization,
interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Personable and able to deal professionally when faced with multiple
demands and short timelines.
- Interest in the post-secondary learning environment, previous experience
in a learning or research environment considered an asset.

UCVM is Canada’s fifth veterinary college, with its first class
