The Department of Pathology at St. Jude Children’s Research
Hospital is seeking anatomic veterinary pathologists to participate
in our animal pathology program. Candidates must have a DVM/VMD
from an AVMA-accredited or equivalent institution and be ACVP Board
certified or Board eligible. Junior or senior level positions
are available, with the rank of appointment dependent upon the qualifications
and experience of the applicant. Training in the pathology of
laboratory animals is desirable, but not essential. Appointees
will provide diagnostic and collaborative research support to investigators
that use animals in their research programs. St. Jude offers
an excellent salary and fringe benefit package commensurate with the
level of appointment and provides relocation assistance. Veterinary
pathologists report to the Chair of Pathology and will work in collaboration
with the Director of the Animal Resource Center to integrate the services
provided by this laboratory into the overall running of the Animal
Resource Center.
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is one of the premier
pediatric cancer hospitals in the United States and is internationally
recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures for children with
cancer and other catastrophic diseases. It has a large Faculty
of clinical and basic investigators organized into traditional academic
departments. Strong inter-departmental programs encompass research
on pediatric solid tumors, hematological malignancies, developmental
neurobiology and brain tumors, infectious diseases, molecular oncogenesis,
and cell and gene therapy. Clinical and basic research activities
are carried out in state-of-the-art buildings that provide an environment
that fosters close collaborations between clinical and basic investigators.
Veterinary Pathology activities at St. Jude are based primarily in
newly built and renovated facilities within the Pathology Department
and the 250,000 sq. ft. Integrated Research Center (IRC). These
facilities consist of a Clinical Pathology Laboratory, a Necropsy Suite,
and a Histology Laboratory. The laboratories are fully equipped
and capable of processing a variety of specimens as they relate to
animal health issues and research protocols. The IRC includes
animal housing of multiple species, transgenic and imaging facilities,
and animal research infrastructure to study complex models of cancer,
infectious and neurological diseases, and genetic disorders. Our
transgenic / gene knockout facility has generated hundreds of genetically
modified mouse strains, affording veterinary pathologists the opportunity
to collaborate with investigators on a wide range of murine developmental
and disease models associated with carcinogenesis, infectious diseases,
immunology and immunologic disorders, metabolic disorders and drug
development. In addition, as members of the Institution’s
Department of Pathology, veterinary pathologists have ample opportunities
to interact with the Department’s 15 Faculty members, who are
involved in clinical and research activities in human clinical and
experimental pathology.
Applicants should send their curriculum vitae and names of three referees
to Dr. D. W. Ellison, Chair, Department of Pathology, St. Jude Children’s
Research Hospital, M/S 250, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Initial
enquiries may be directed to Dr. Ellison or Dr. J. Rehg, Department
of Pathology: 901-595-3533 (tel.).
