Veterinary Pathologist
SoBran, Inc has a position available to serve as Veterinary Pathologist
in the NIH/NIAID operated Comparative Medicine Branch Animal Care Program
in Bethesda, MD.
Overview:
Responsible for overseeing the operations of a full-service histopathology
laboratory as part of the Comparative Medicine Branch (CMB) to provide
pathology services to NIAID, Division of Intramural Research investigators.
The incumbent is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing
new basic and applied research areas and priorities directed toward a
more complete understanding of the pathogenesis of specific infectious
diseases. These investigations require detailed histopathologic, immunohistochemical,
and molecular analyses of tissue specimens of both naturally occurring
and experimentally infected animal models. NIAID, DIR animal facilities
house a variety of laboratory animal species including many genetically
engineered rodents and several non-rodent species, including nonhuman
primates. The NIAID, DIR animal program is fully accredited by
AAALAC, International. Animal studies are conducted at Animal Biosafety
Levels (ABSL) 2, 3, 4. The incumbent directs or collaborates in
the development of new molecular and immunological reagents and assays
for the rapid and specific identification of pathogens in animal tissues.
Incumbent may conduct research of interest involving diseases of laboratory
animals. Incumbent prepares and/or collaborates in the preparation of
technical reports on the results of investigations and studies, presents
results on current findings at scientific meetings and conferences, and
prepares manuscripts for publication in scientific journals. Provides
expert gross, histopathologic and clinical evaluation of animal tissues
for the diagnosis and study of infectious diseases. Performs gross necropsies
and works on experimental animal models and pathogens in Animal Biosafety
Level 2, 3 and 4 facilities as necessary. Provides professional guidance
and consultation to appropriate staff regarding anatomy, physiology,
pathology, veterinary care, clinical diseases of laboratory animals,
including nonhuman primates. Provides laboratory support for epidemic
investigations associated with zoonotic emerging infectious diseases
and provides field guidance and advice for proper collection techniques
for specimens from animal sources.
Description of Duties:
- Oversee operations of a full-service histopathology laboratory. The
pathology lab serves as a research support (customer service) resource
for NIAID investigators.
- Manage one other veterinary pathologist and two histotechnicians.
- Assist with the annual budget to support the pathology section.
- Serve as the main “point of contact” for the histopathology
laboratory service. Consult with all parties involved with the service
as needed to set up pertinent procedures and schedules. Provide an efficient
channel between investigators and the CMB hisopathology lab.
- Assist investigators with animal model experiment development – provide
consultations on which cells and/or processes to concentrate on to assist
the NIAID investigators with histological aspects of their research.
- Assist NIAID investigators with report-writing for publication in scientific
journals.
- Develop and provide investigator training presentations on histology,
pathology, and related topics, as requested.
- Provide investigators necropsy assistance, direct individuals on the
necessary steps associated with the technical duties needed to collect
tissues, as requested.
- Schedule time in expectation for meetings with investigator’s,
outside the facility if necessary, to assist in coordinating animal research
needs.
- Maintain integrity of the research process, including detailed accurate
record keeping.
- Ability to work flexible hours to ensure research needs and experiments
are carried out to comply with appropriate timelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Must be experienced in gross and histopathology of laboratory animals,
including nonhuman primates. Must have a degree in veterinary medicine
and be board certified in anatomical pathology by the American College
of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP). Preference will be given to
an individual with a Ph.D. with study in the areas of infectious diseases,
pathogenesis of disease, and/or pathology of the lymphoid system. The
individual must be able to communicate pathological principles clearly
verbally, as well as in writing, in order to provide the best service
to members of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
(NIAID).
