Veterinary Pathologist

The University of Pittsburgh, Division of Laboratory Animal Resources
(DLAR) is seeking a Veterinary Pathologist to provide diagnostic and research
support services for the Institution and its related Cores and Centers.
The division oversees a large, diverse, AAALAC, Int. accredited biomedical
animal research program. The University of Pittsburgh is currently ranked
sixth nationally in NIH academic funding. Included in the University’s
multiple facilities is an active transgenic gene typing core, rodent behavioral
testing cores, multiple nonhuman primate colonies, bioengineering and regenerative
medicine institutes, and world-renowned transplantation, resuscitation,
AIDS, neuroscience, vaccine, and cancer research programs, as well as a
newly opened regional biocontainment laboratory focusing on research in
infectious disease agents. This position will report to the Associate Clinical
Director, an ACVP Board Certified Veterinary Pathologist. Primary responsibilities
include colony health management diagnostic pathology; research pathology
support participation, development of a collaborative rodent phenotyping
core for the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and other institutional
users of genetically altered mice, nonhuman primate infectious disease
projects (including numerous Biosafety level III studies) and a variety
of other ancillary investigative efforts requiring anatomic pathology support
data. Also required will be oversight and organization of operations of
the DLAR histology and clinical diagnostic laboratories, as well as interfacing
with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Histology Services; participation
in preparation and submission of case materials for the Armed Forces Institute
of Pathology Wednesday Slide Conference Series (institutional participating
member for 28 years). Additional duties will include involvement in a variety
of DLAR & institutional programmatic activities such as IACUC membership,
disease remediation planning, basic pathology training to laboratory animal
veterinarians preparing for ACLAM boards as well as other interested staff
and researchers and the sharing of a number of other basic administrative,
regulatory and some clinical responsibilities. Opportunities for collaborative
participation in research projects are readily available and such involvement
is welcomed, as are the development of independent research initiatives.
Qualified candidates must hold a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from
an AVMA accredited institution, be licensed in the United States and eligible
for veterinary licensure in Pennsylvania. The ideal candidate will
be a Diplomat of the ACVP (or possess certification by an equivalent examination
body) or be immediately Board eligible, possess excellent written and verbal
communication skills and have familiarity and research interest with the
diseases and pathological processes in a variety of laboratory animal species.
Presentation of work/findings at appropriate regional and national meetings,
as well as publication in scientific journals is expected.
This position is a non tenure, faculty appointment as Clinical Assistant
Professor in the DLAR. Salary and academic appointment for the position
will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience and qualifications. The
