|Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute|
Description of Externship:
Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute (LRRI) is a private biomedical research organization dedicated to improving public health through research on the prevention, treatment, and cure of respiratory disease. LRRI conducts a wide variety of basic and preclinical research studies investigating responses (primarily in respiratory system, but also many other organ systems) to toxicants, pollutants, infectious diseases and therapeutic agents. Short term (1-2 week) externship opportunities for junior or senior veterinary medical students with an interest in pathology are focused on introducing the student to some aspects of the role pathologists play in modern biomedical research. Activities are informal and may vary widely depending upon the ongoing work/studies. Typically they include opportunities to shadow technicians and pathologists in clinical pathology, necropsy and histology laboratories as well as opportunities to interact with other members of the research team (technicians, scientists, clinical veterinarians, etc.). In some cases, short term projects may be available and provide an opportunity for significant independent work with guidance from LRRI scientists.
